McLibel Support Campaign

Emails and rumours have been circulating amongst McDonald's employees that many are planning to join in the World Day of Action Against McDonald's (Oct 16th) with go slows, passing around leaflets and joining protest pickets outside and so on. Some of these emails have been appearing in chat rooms on anti-McDonald's websites.

Here is some information from a concerned employee at a drive-thru store in the north of England. [The store details are not named to protect the source.]

The store has posted this official notice on the crew notice boards:

"No employee will demonstrate or associate with the media against McDonalds on October 16th whether scheduled to work or not. Those who are caught doing so will be liable for immediate dismissal."

This outrageous threat shows the panic the company gets in when workers want to think for themselves or exercise their rights.

It is thought to be illegal, in contravention of the European Convention on Human Rights.

The McLibel Support Campaign call for solidarity with McDonald's workers, for support for their efforts to improve their wages, conditions and rights at work, and for support for their human rights to freedom of expression.

Matt,

You have raised an important issue.

Along the same lines, it was reported yesterday that the recently unionized Wal-Mart in Jonquiere, QC is claiming it is not profitable and may have to close.

How coincidental this insolvency comes to light only after the unionization vote goes through.

The labour movement has been beaten down lately. As manufacturing jobs have been lost and the unions weakened they have found it difficult to gain footholds in the services sectors which all too often have either very young, part-time workers or very old retirees seeking to supplement their pensions.

A wise union would incorporate the power of AARP and CARP (American and Canadian Associations for Retired People) along with student societies to create a common front.

You heard it here first.
