The final, official results are not in yet, but the question everybody's asking is, whassup with the prizes?
Well, as grizzled Tour Pool veterans will attest, there are two kinds of prizes in the Tour Pool: cash and merchandise.
First, there's cold, hard cash. Based on our total haul of $980 this year, $490 goes straight back into prizes, as follows:
1st $150
2nd $75
3rd $55
4th $50
5th $40
6th $35
7th $30
8th $25
9th $20
10th $10
As you all know, the remaining $490 go straight to the Seenite Sports espoir bursary for local cyclists. Of course, any prize winner who donates his or her cash winnings back into the bursary earns an automatic spot in paradise, thus permitting them all manner of sinning ways for the remainder of their lives. Not to mention the eternal gratitude of Ross Knight.
The second kind of prizes are the generous donations of the Cyclery and local reps. We have on offer the following:
Tour Pool winner: A Giro Pneumo helmet
Tour Pool second overall: A signed George Hincapie jersey
Tour Pool third overall: A pair of Michelin Tour de France edition tires
Most days in the lead: A pair of Shimano wheel bags
Most stage wins: A carbon water bottle cage
Greatest drop in the standings from day 1 to finish: A Cyclery water bottle and socks package
Greatest climb in the standings from day 1 to finish: A Level 6 hat
Top-ranked entry that picked Astana: A Cyclery water bottle and socks package
Lanterne Rouge: a red blinky light
Once the final results are official on Sunday, we will announce the happy winners, who can then pick up their prizes at the Cyclery, starting Tuesday. In the meantime, don't count your chickens until they're hatched ...

While we wait for the Tour results, and therefore the Tour Pool results, to become official on Sunday, we have had a couple requests to know who the best picks in the Pool were. More specifically, we were asked to put together a "Dream Team" of the top-scoring riders.
Well, the hamsters got their wheels spinning and the team is below. Anyone who picked these nine riders and team, plus guessed the total finishers, would have earned 1,166 points.
The obvious best pick in the Pool was overall winner Contador, followed by green jersey winner Boonen, and as usual a couple other sprinters (Hunter and Zabel) made it into this elite group. But it's also interesting to see a pure climber, Soler, make it (thanks, no doubt, to there being three mountain-top finishes). Rasmussen is still there, too, as his results up to his abandon still stand.
Our overall winner did quite well, scoring 806 points, or 69% of the possible maximum score. But it just goes to show how hard it is to pick teams for the Pool ...
Every year, there's one rider that nobody picks and everybody wished they had. This time it was Soler. Nobody chose the unknown Columbian, so nobody got to cash in on the 113 points he earned on his way to Paris.
On the flip side, everyone save the Lanterne Rouge contenders can breathe easy that they didn't pick Moreni, who scored a surreal -76 points by abandoning, testing positive and being arrested.
So, put that info in the bank for next year -- it could come in handy ...

The Tour is over but not the scandals: it was announced today that Iban Mayo's rest day test came back positive for EPO -- not exactly what the Tour needed at this point. As ever, cycling's efforts to catch the cheaters seems to be working, to some extent at least, but the sport's reputation keeps taking a hammering.
As things stand, Mayo's results all still stand, but he loses 25 points in the Pool for his positive. We'll have to see if they remove his stage results, or the results of Vinokourov, for that matter. As I said before the Tour started, we will base the final, official results on the Tour website one week to the minute after the finish of the final stage. That will be 11:53 a.m. EST next Sunday, so no prizes will be distributed this week.
Anyway, enough rambling: everyone wants to know how the Tour Pool played out. With Mayo's positive affecting a lot of teams, there was a shuffle at the finish and an unexpected, last-minute surge for victory from ... drum roll ... Alex Lai, with 806 points.
Alex improves on her previous best placing of seventh in 2005 and now joins an illustrious list of previous winners: Peter Metuzals (2001 and 2002), Stephano DiCilclismo (2003), Sheri Jay (2004), Gunter Hauschildt (2005) and Chris Holzauer (2006).
In so doing, Alex flew past Paul Skafel (note corrected spelling) as if he were at a standstill, crushing him by a whopping 28 points. The Hamburglars squeaked into a podium spot well back at 744 points. Meylina Kandoy was just five points further back, wtih Chris Holzauer another two points behind. Blaine Penny, Peter Metuzals, Sheri Jay (who scored the most GC points) and Orange Scheisse round out the top 10.
Competition was no less heated at the back of the Pool, as perennial backmarkers Off the Back just hung on to the lanterne rouge position by a single point over Kate Scallion.
A big thank you to all the hamsters and other helpers on the Tour Pool. Anyone interested in hoisting a pint to celebrate the end of this year's edition of the greatest bike race on Earth should meet me at Vineyard's in the Ottawa market tomorrow night (Tuesday) at 9:00 pm.
We will have any new developments, a list of prizes and reminders for those who may have forgotten to pay their entry for you later this week, so stay tuned!

It's finally over: Daniele Bennati won the charge to the line on the Champs Elysees to end a Tour de France that was both a sporting triumph and a public relations nightmare. With one doping scandal after another leading to calls for drastic measures -- including removing cycling from the Olympics -- Alberto Contador's overall victory is hard to take seriously.
But the crowds were as thick as ever on the roadside, and maybe Contador does represent a new hope as cycling tries to emerge from its deep-rooted ethical problems. Everyone is probably holding their collective breaths in the hope that no new positive tests come to light in the coming days.
One small bright spot: the rumoured positive test of Mauricio Soler turned out to be just that -- a rumour.
The hamsters are busy spinning their wheels to get us the final results, and we won't have the final compilation until tomorrow. Meanwhile, we can give you the standings with the results from the final stage.
Peter Metuzals came through with the last-gasp stage win with a solid 60 points, ahead of Orange Scheisse with 57, who have come on strong on the last few stages, and Top Chillin in third with 48. It was a fairly high scoring stage, although 15 teams failed to score a point.
Paul Scafel continues to lead, but by just 10 points over the late-charging Hamburglars, and a further eight over Alex Lai. Meylina Kandoy and Chris Holzauer aren't out of reach, either. Everything will depend on how the final GC plays out.
Until tomorrow, when all will be revealed -- KW

The time trial may not have shaken up the overall classification in the Tour today, but it did compress the time gaps among the top three. Contador hung on to the yellow jersey by just 23 seconds over evans, while stage winner Leipheimer is another eight seconds back. Sastre is the next closest, but at over seven minutes, so if there is any possibility of a GC change on the final day, the winner will come from among the current top three.
It's not very likely anyone will try to dislodge Contador tomorrow: Discovery will be vigilant for any attempt from Evans, and the stage is likely to be dominated by an early break and then finished by the sprinters, so the time bonuses aren't likely to come into play. But you never know what will happen in sport so we'll just have to wait and see.
The final showdown on the Champs Elysees will be equally important in the Pool, with the top three spots covered by just 22 points. Paul Scafel continues to lead, but Alex Lai has closed to within 14 points, and the resurgent Hamburglars are another eight points down. In their wake, Chris Holzhauer (I'm trying a new spelling on his name today) is grimly hanging on to fourth, and Meylina Kandoy is now fifth.
The stage honours go to Sheri Jay, who dominated the stage over Orange Scheisse, with Liisa Bjerkelund and Bryan Gormley in third. A good performance from Oro Rocks in seventh today, too.
So, it all comes down to the final run to the finish tomorrow. An eventful and at times painful Tour was matched by an eventful Pool, and the champions of both competitions can consider themseles truly worthy of the honour that will be showered upon them. Speaking of which, I'm waiting for official word on the prize list for the Pool. More on that tomorrow.
