TDF Pool - Stage 18

The French have something to cheer about in this year's Tour after Sandy Casar took a canny stage win in Angouleme today. Earlier in the stage, Casar crashed heavily when he hit a dog that was crossing the road, and he finished the stage scraped and battered but very happy.

(This is the second dog-related crash in this year's Tour ... sadly, it is no longer the Year of the Dog, so we can discount a Chinese plot to sabotage the Tour, though it is now the Year of the Pig so we know what to look out for.)

The Tour organizers may be pleased with a home rider winning the stage, but rumour has it their happiness will be short-lived, as another rider has supposedly tested positive. The word on the street is that it's polka-dot jersey Juan Mauricio Soler, but that remains to be seen. So much for having a scandal-free end of the Tour ...

Orange Scheisse has taken today's stage in the Pool, besting the old-timer Peter Metuzals and John Fee. The Hamburglars also had a good stage, but they only gained a point on overall leader Paul Scafel. A special mention goes to FEV, who was equal fourth with Hamburglars and is one of the key people behind the Tour Pool.

Meylina Kandoy lost seven points and her run at the overall win is looking to be in doubt, though she did pass the equally shaky Chris Holtzhauer, who sits now third, one point back. Alex Lai is starting to look good for a podium: she's fourth, one point behind Holtzhauer.

The time trial tomorrow will definitely shake things up, hopefully in the Tour, but possibly in the Pool as well. It should be an exciting day.

It's an exciting day tomorrow in Victoria, BC, too: the elite and junior classes will be racing at the BMX world championships, so my update may be a little late.

Until tomorrow, when I will bring you all the glory, shame, scandals and joy.

TDF Pool - Stage 17

As anticipated yesterday, yellow jersey Michael Rasmussen didn't start today's stage of the Tour after his team pulled him for lying about his whereabouts earlier in the year. A pretty drastic decision on their part, but probably the only one they could take to protect even a tiny fraction of their credibility.

So we have a Tour with a farcical battery of positive tests (Sinkewitz, Vinokourov and Moreni) and Rasmussen's unusual case, with media and sponsors walking away, and the fans booing the riders.

Yet despite this it's still a crackerjack Tour, with huge numbers of spectators on the roadside. Contador is leading with a narrow 1:53 margin over Evans and 2:49 over Leipheimer, with a long time trial coming up on Saturday. Will we see the first-ever Australian Tour winner? Can Contador hang on? Does Levi have anything left?

One Pool entry that has nothing left is erstwhile leader Chris Holtzhauer, who had an abysmal day, scoring just two points and dropping to 12 points behind Paul Scafel. Lucky for Chris, Meylina Kandoy also scored just two today and still sits third, ahead of Alex Lai.

It was a pretty low-scoring day all around, save for Orange Scheisse, Peter Metuzals and Ian Dalling. A special mention to The Bat Returns in fourth, who has seldom been seen this high on the stage rankings.

So, what next? It's hard to imagine things getting any worse, but I've said that before so I'll keep my predictions to myself for the time being.

In the meantime, a quick note on scoring. I was asked if riders who test positive have all their points removed. The answer is no, all the results that are official count, so as long as a rider wasn't removed from the stage result because of a positive test, they still get the points.

Also, please note that our chief hamster is adding her own little editorial comments by tweaking the team names from day to day, in case you were wondering where that came from.

Until tomorrow -- KW

TDF Pool - Stage 16

When I suggested Alex Vinokourov had lots of surprises in store for us after stage 15, I was expecting more audacious attacks and gritty performances. I suppose deep down in my cynical self I might have added a positive doping test, but I didn't think he would be stupid enough to get caught, but as we have all seen, that is what has happened. So, no more Vino, and no more Astana at the Tour.

Add to that, Moreni gets busted for testosterone on stage 11, resulting in the withdrawal of the whole Cofidis team, and the word on the street is that none other than yellow jersey Rasmussen has been pulled out of the Tour by his team for lying about his whereabouts to the anti-doping agencies.

The racing has become almost an afterthought, and that's a shame because the racing has been fantastic. There was another mountain showdown between Contador and Rasmussen today, with the Dane coming out on top and virtually guaranteeing himself the overall victory ... until his team pulls him out. The news isn't official yet, so Rasmussen's results from today stand in the Pool. We'll see what the morning brings.

No matter how disillusioned we may become about the Tour, we always have the pure, unadulterated and fair competition that is the Tour Pool. There's no way to artificially enhance your performance in this kind of competition, short of bribing the hamsters with sunflower seeds, so we are safe in the knowledge that Damdom is the true champion of stage 16, and that Ben Sporer and Cynthia Phelan didn't do anything unethical to share the podium with them. It will be interesting to see how they fare without Rasmussen, but that's another story altogether.

On the overall, Chris Holtzhauer is still clinging tenaciously to hope, as he has rebounded in the wake of the scandals to joint lead in the Pool with Paul Scafel. Meylina Kandoy is third a mere three points behind, and it's a relatively big gap back to Alex Lai in fourth, the Hamburglars in fifth and so on.

Undisturbed by all the scandals, Team Off the Back sits secure in their abysmal -20 record. They likely don't feel threatened by Scallion's drop to -4 and can continue to plod along with red lanterns dancing in their head.

Here's hoping there is a stage tomorrow, because there's still a lot of good racing ahead -- providing there are enough riders left to race!

TDF Pool - Stage 15

Two days ago, Vinokourov destroyed everybody in the time trial. Yesterday, he had no legs and finished 28 minutes back. And then today, he soloed away from the second group on the final climb, went straight past the break and won the stage.

Who knows what the Kazakh has in store for us after tomorrow's rest day, but it's sure to be interesting. As is the Contador-Rasmussen battle: today, Contador's relentless pressure dropped everyone except Rasmussen, and the yellow jersey must surely be happy to have put yet more time in the riders that can time trial so much better than him. With Evans at four minutes, and Leipheimer and Kloden at more than five, it will take a 2005-style meltdown for Rasmussen to lose yellow.

Having said that, he will be looking to gain more time in the final mountain stage on Wednesday because Saturday's time trial is less likely to flatter the Dane than the race in Albi. The roads are flatter and straighter, so the true TT specialists will have their chance to shine.

But plenty can happen between now and then. A single bad day can put anyone out of contention, as we saw with Vinokourov, and Rasmussen has two long and tough stages on Thursday and Friday to worry about Astana-style aggression from Discovery or Lotto.

Rasmussen could learn a valuable lesson from the Icarus-like fate of Chris Holzhauer, who is fading fast after showing such promise earlier on, and now sits third, a point behind joing leaders Paul Scafel. The Hamburglars are still sitting tough in fourth.

Props to Alex Lai who has picked up another stage win. Like Vinokourov, she likely finds this small consolation for her dashed hopes in the overall standings.

Special mention to team Here We Go Again, which finished joint second on the stage and is now 21st in the overall ...

Until tomorrow ... we should have some announcements on the prize list for this year's Tour Pool -- KW

TDF Pool - Stage 14

A phenomenal day of bike racing today ended with Michael Rasmussen taking a serious option on overall victory in the Tour de France. The Dane was matched only by the 24-year-old Alberto Contador, who took the win on the Plateau de Beille, and the pair now occupy the top two spots in the overall standings.

Contador now sits in second overall at 2:23, Evans is at 3:04, and Leipheimer is at 4:29. None of those riders took more than 1:41 out of Rasmussen in the Albi time trial, so they must now be wondering if they will have any chance to win the overall even with the stage 19 time trial to come. And Rasmussen still has tomorrow's monster stage to gain time on his rivals, plus a rest day on Tuesday to recover for the final five days of the Tour.

Vinokourov may has raised hopes of a comeback with his time trial win yesterday, but they were dashed today when he cracked on the Col de Pailheres and ended the stage almost a half hour down. To add injury to insult, he crashed when a spectator's flag got caught in his teammate's wheel.

Amid all the other action, stage 9 winner and rising star Juan Mauricio Soler finished third on the stage and moved to just two points behind Rasmussen in the polka-dot jersey competition.

Of course, the subplot of all this is, as usual, doping suspicions and allegations. This time it's been revealed that Rasmussen has missed some out-of-competition tests and has been kicked off the Danish national team, and a former teammate has come forward saying the Dane tried to trick him into smuggling doping products back in his mountain biking days. It's tough to know what to believe anymore ... we may also need to start dope testing in the Pool, especially if Holzhauer continues to hang on to his lead.

Alex Lai took the stage win in the Pool, with Henry Mai in second and Liisa Bjerkelund and Sheri Jay tied for third. It was a high scoring stage, but not for the Hamburglars who have faded back down to fourth place. Holtzhauer continues to lead by a mere five points, but now it's Paul Skafel in second, Meylina Kandoy in third at nine points and the Hamburglars 16 points down.

It goes without saying that Off the Back is still dead last at -20.

Some of you have wanted to "trash talk" in the Pool, and have noticed that you can't do this anymore. That's because I have turned off this feature on our blog due to "comment spam". I will try turning it back on for the next couple stages to see if the problem comes back, so for the time being, comment away!

More excitement, scandal, and ups and downs tomorrow. Until then -- KW

TDF Pool - Stage 13

They say the yellow jersey gives you wings, and that applied to the Chicken today, who pulled out a very creditable 11th place in the first big time trial of the Tour. In the process, he defended his overall lead and set the Tour up for an exciting final week.

Rasmussen also put several of his erstwhile rivals to shame. He passed Valverde, who started three minutes ahead of him; Cancellara, Kloden and Contador all crashed on the slippery roads; and he took more than three minutes out of Mayo.

Vinokourov won the stage and is now back in the top 10 overall, but he still has more than five minutes to make up on Rasmussen.

Cadel Evans was only able to claw back a minute and 41 seconds on Rasmussen and now sits in second overall, a minute behind. Will he be able to stay close enough to the Dane in the mountains to take the lead in the final time trial? Who else will put themselves in GC contention? Will Rasmussen crack under the pressure? Or will he peck away at his rivals in the mountains enough to hang on to Paris?

The wind has changed in the Tour Pool slightly, with the Hamburglars regaining some lost ground with a strong stage result, tied for the win with Paul McAneney, with Liisa Bjerkelund just one point back. Holtzhauer came up 30 points short on the stage, and now leads by just five points over Kandoy and eight over the resurgent Hamburglars.

No changes at the back, sadly, as Off the Back continues to be exactly that.

Tomorrow will be another crucial day, with a mountain top finish at Plateau de Beille, preceded by the very difficult Col de Pailheres.

Until then -- KW
