Sorry for missing posting after yesterday's stage. In the interest of brevity, here it is: there was a break, it got caught, McEwen won the sprint, Metuzals kept his lead in the pool.
Now, the time trial today was pretty interesting. Nobody really knew what was going to happen, and in the end we got a mess of confirmed expectations mixed with a couple surprises and a number of disappointments. Downer number one was Bobby Julich, who repeated his already remarkable exploit of crashing out of the '99 Tour in a time trial by, you guessed it, crashing out of the '06 Tour in a time trial. You'd figure he'd learn but, hey, he's the one who gets paid, not me.
Meanwhile, Leapin' Levi Leipenheimer was disappointing his fans in a more conventional manner, by simply going slowly -- a full six minutes off the winner's pace. No word on an explanation so far, but he's effectively out of contention for the overall now. Hincapie also dropped the ball in his bid to succeed Lance, losing 2:42.
It was Serhiy Honchar (or Sergei Gontchar, depending who's counting) who stole the show by winning the TT for T-Mobile by more than a minute over his closest rival. But is he a contender? He's got the team to back him up, but he has never demonstrated he can climb and, at 36, it's a little late to learn, and Honchar/Gontchar has his own history of run-ins with the doping police ... The boys in pink are more likely to work for Michael Rogers (1'08" back, who can climb, but well enough to win the Tour?) or Andreas Kloden (1'50", who was supposed to be the heir-apparent for Ullrich). And how good is Sinkewitz (1'45")?. Anyway, Landis is sitting pretty at one minute, despite various mechanical issues so far.
No change at the top of the Tour Pool, with one point separating Metuzals and DeVeer. Julich's abandon caused some pain -- six entrants chose him -- but nobody chose Honchar/Gontchar, and the other top performers are balancing each other out for the time being.
Contratulations to Julie Deschenes-Furry, by the way, for her stage win. Also, Il Gatto's fine 62nd place on the stage propelled him out of dead last into a tie for dead last. Nicely done.
Until tomorrow -- K-Dub out

Man, when will the break stick? These pack finishes are almost as tiresome as those Bowflex ads ...
The golden rule is the pack can chase back a minute every 10 kilometres, and Dumoulin and Schroder had almost exactly one minute with 10 km to go, but the speed differential between a tired pair who have spent 200 km up the road and a charging peloton is simply too great. This time Oscar Freire picked up the stage in a wild and woolly sprint, marking a welcome change from Robbie M., and Boonen nipped home in second, bringing him within a point of McEwen in the green jersey chase. Otherwise, no change to the overall.
Status quo in the Tour Pool too, with the top contenders matching one another stage for stage -- though they were beaten to the line by The Cyclery and Ian Dalling, who tied for first (when's the last time that happened, Vince?)
Metuzals still sits a point ahead of Helena DeVeer, a further 20 points back sit Crowley and Gilligan, and another 10 points back Bryan leads a little pack including Sander, Campbell, Chiang, Proulx and classy-as-ever Orange Scheisse. Glenn Robinson is in no man's land, and then there is a steady progression all the way back to Phil Brun del Re in 85th. I won't mention Mr. Glen and Il Gatto, still stuck at 0 and -5 points respectively, because I don't want to publicly humiliate them.
The sprinters get to play again tomorrow before the first real shuffle of the Tour, the 52 km time trial from St-Gregoire to Rennes.
The update tomorrow might be a bit late because I have another working trip (to Bromont this time). So, if you want the standings before I can get them to you, sharpen your pencils!
Cheers,
-- KW

A long stage back into France today, another long and ultimately unsuccessful break and another close sprint finish won by McEwen. The sprinters are doing their thing while all the contenders seem to be content to watch each other and sty to stay out of trouble. With the burden of leadership on a number of new shoulders this year, one gets the impression nobody is willing to show their hand yet ... drive to arrive, baby, drive to arrive ...
The Cyclery TDF Pool stage finish was also tight -- in fact, too close to call with an eight-way tie for first between Peter Metuzals, Helena DeVeer, "Team Blood Wash", Linda Gilligan, Jamie Bryan, Stefan Sander, Markus Chiang and the irrepressible Steve Proulx. Since these are the top eight teams in the pool, there are no changes: Metuzals still leads by a single point over DeVeer.
A couple teams deserve special mention for their low-key approach to the early stages: Mr. Glen has scored zero points so far (he entered the pool late, so couldn't pick anyone who had already scored), and Il Gatto has not only failed to score a point but somehow contrived to lose five thanks to Di Luca's abandon. Keep your spirits up, boys, it's a long tour.

Stage 3 is done, Boonen swapped his rainbow stripes for yellow, Valverde, Fast Freddie and Thomas Dekker are out, and Matthias Kessler delivered the first non-sprint victory of the 2006 Tour. Crashes, the heat and the Ardennes took a small toll on the Tour, and things are just starting to get interesting ...
... as they are in the Tour Pool. Peter Metuzals continues to lead but a sub-par performance on the stage combined with a fine second place from Helena DeVeer have shaved his lead to a single point. Paul Crowley (who had an error in his entry, now fixed) is a ways back in third.
A fine stage win for John Fee and Cynthia Phelan, for whom Boonen, Rogers and Discovery came through big time. DeVeer shared second place honours with "Texless" Spencer Campbell and the charmingly named Orange Scheisse.
Should be another day for the sprinters tomorrow as the Tour heads back to France.

So, thanks to time bonuses, Thor Hushovd is back in yellow after stage 2 of the 2006 Tour! A nice recovery from his dramatic blood-covered finish yesterday.
No such changes in the Tour Pool, though, with Peter Metuzals still leading over Helena DeVeer and Jamie Bryan. The points spread is very even down the pool, reflecting the variety of picks, but the Tour's first abandon (Danilo Di Luca, suffering from a fever) puts Il Gatto in the unfortunate position of having the only negative score in the Pool ... way to go, Marco.
Until tomorrow ... Kris W.

Hello all,
I'm back in Ottawa and time for a quick update on the 2006 The Cyclery Tour de France Pool!
First off, welcome everyone and thanks for supporting cycling development in the Ottawa area. We have a solid 86 entrants in this year's Pool, which means $430 to the Seenite bursary.
After all the fuss and muss of Operation Puerto the Tour got underway with 13 fewer riders than it was supposed to, including three favourites and an entire team. But racing got underway anyway, with Thor Hushovd winning the prologue and Jimmy Casper stage 1. Hushovd got a nasty cut in his arm from a spectator's "PMU hand" (Google it if you really care), but he should still start tomorrow.
I have depressing news for the Tour Pool standings: former multi-time winner Peter Metuzals is leading. This means he will be even more sarcastic, condescending and overbearing than he normally is, but we expect no less from the "Gentle Giant of the Glebe". At the opposite end of the scale, Il Gatto is holding steady with zero points so far.
I am keeping this update brief, but I feel compelled to pass comment on some of the team nicknames. They range from the brazenly tasteless ("Team Blood Wash") to unsubtly ironic ("My Team is Clean", who had picked Ullrich, Basso and Mancebo). The ultimate, though, is "D.O.P.E. - Discounting Operation Puerto Evidence", which I would have choice words for if one of the shared entrants wasn't recovering from a dislocated shoulder suffered in a nasty crash yesterday at road nationals. Get well soon, Andrew Randell.
A lot of teams are now down below nine riders because of the non-starters in the Tour. I'll circulate a complete list later on.
All the best,
Kris Westwood
